Because of their small size, they can more easily diffuse across cell membranes and can generally be taken as a pill. They&#8217;ve been a mainstay in the treatment for a variety of diseases and make up approximately 90% of medicines used today. We\u2019re designing small molecules to engage a variety of tissue and cellular targets involved in a wide range of diseases. They&#8217;re intended to combine the potential for oral administration that comes with small molecules with the potency and target specificity of an antibody.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"mccberg-tab-content mccberg-tab-content-3\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monoclonal antibodies<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/vip2-msd.com\/merckcom-migrated\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/152\/2025\/03\/MAB-500px.jpg?w=500\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3665064\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are discovered and designed to bind to specific molecular targets to inhibit or modulate a biologic activity with the goal of helping improve disease outcomes. Therapeutic mAbs often target pathogens circulating in the blood or molecules on the surface of cells, including receptors and antigens. We&#8217;re also investigating the use of mAbs to diversify the prevention landscape by providing rapid protection against certain infectious diseases through passive immunity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Multi-specific antibodies<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/vip2-msd.com\/merckcom-migrated\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/152\/2025\/07\/W6092555-2025-GC-Visuals-for-Modality-Webpage_Bispecific_v1.01.png?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3670892\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Multi-specific antibodies are engineered on an antibody framework to have multiple distinct binding domains that can bind to various targets, with the goal of providing improved benefit over binding a single target.<br><br>T-cell engagers are a type of bispecific antibody designed to recruit and activate T cells to recognize and attack tumor cells by triggering the release of cytotoxic molecules that work to kill the tumor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fusion proteins<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/vip2-msd.com\/merckcom-migrated\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/152\/2025\/07\/W6092555-2025-GC-Visuals-for-Modality-Webpage_Fusion_Protein_v1.01.jpg?w=800\" alt=\"Fusion proteins\" class=\"wp-image-3670615\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fusion proteins link multiple protein domains into longer functional proteins. In oncology, ADCs consist of an antibody, a linker and a payload of cytotoxic (cell-killing) agent, such as chemotherapy. The ADC, through the antibody, binds to a specific target \u2014 a protein or receptor \u2014 expressed on the surface of a cancer cell. The ADC is then absorbed into the cell where the chemotherapy is released and works to kill the cell.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peptide-drug conjugates (PDCs)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1466\" height=\"823\" src=\"https:\/\/vip2-msd.com\/merckcom-migrated\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/152\/2025\/03\/image-2-1.png?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3666163\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Peptide-drug conjugates (PDCs) are considered the next generation of targeted therapeutics after ADCs. PDCs use a carrier peptide conjugated to a small molecule cytotoxin, such as chemotherapy, to precisely bind to the target and deliver the payload, which is the cytotoxin that kills the cancer cells. Different vaccine technologies can be used to generate a vaccine depending on the pathogen. We&#8217;re diversifying across viral, protein and RNA-based vaccines. We&#8217;re also investigating the use of monoclonal antibodies to diversify the prevention landscape by providing rapid protection against certain infectious diseases through passive immunity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Live attenuated virus vaccines<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the most common childhood vaccines are live attenuated virus vaccines. These vaccines use a weakened form of a virus that do not cause disease but can still replicate just enough to train the immune system. This close imitation of natural infection typically elicits broad, long-lasting immunity and has formed the basis of many long\u2011standing preventive vaccine programs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Protein subunit vaccines<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Protein\u2011based vaccines contain purified pieces of a pathogen \u2014 either a single protein (subunit) or a protein chemically linked to a carrier molecule (conjugate) \u2014 that safely mimic the pathogen and prompt a protective immune response.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ribonucleic acid (RNA) vaccines<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines mimic the natural cellular machinery and deliver a transient genetic blueprint that instructs cells to produce a disease\u2011specific protein and spark an immune response.<br>These RNA approaches share the same core principle as traditional mRNA vaccines \u2014 leveraging the body\u2019s own cells as antigen factories \u2014 while pushing the technology toward more personalized interventions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #00857C\">\u201cWe know more about diseases than ever before.
