It can change any second,\u201d John Bald said he realized when his ski trip ended in the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While on the slopes several years ago, Bald, a father of three and grandfather of three, started to feel chest pain. What he thought was heartburn kept getting worse with each run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I finally got to the hospital, I ran to the emergency window, and by the time I got to the window, I almost collapsed,\u201d Bald said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His doctors discovered he was having a heart attack. They found a 95% blockage of his right coronary artery, a common sign of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), and he later learned he had high levels of LDL cholesterol, also known as bad cholesterol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The blockage was cleared, and Bald received a stent in his heart to keep his artery open and improve blood flow to the rest of his body. As someone who had been active and relatively healthy, he was surprised by his diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD)?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>ASCVD is a condition caused by the buildup of plaque (bad cholesterol, fats and other substances) within the arteries, leading to narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can result in serious cardiovascular events such as heart attacks or strokes. ASCVD includes diseases that can narrow or block arteries in your heart, legs, and\/or brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The risks of high cholesterol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bald learned his high LDL cholesterol put him at an increased risk of a future heart attack or stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A high level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is one of several risk factors that can contribute to the development of ASCVD. Plaques can silently build up in arteries over time, which may increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1322\" height=\"742\" src=\"https:\/\/vip2-msd.com\/merckcom-migrated\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/152\/2025\/09\/John-Bald-with-Kid.png?w=1024\" alt=\"John Bald in a swimming pool and holding hands with small grandchild \" class=\"wp-image-3675256\"\/><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Bald and his doctor came up with a treatment plan to manage his cholesterol. These conversations with his doctor, in addition to medication and lifestyle changes, helped Bald lower his risk of future cardiovascular events. It was great to hear from so many people, and I\u2019m impressed by everyone\u2019s dedication to their health,\u201d said McGraw. \u201cThe stories we received shed an important light on the similar hardships people in the community face as they work toward achieving their blood sugar goals.\u201d<\/p><p>Since its inception three years ago, <i>America\u2019s Diabetes Challenge<\/i> has encouraged people with type 2 diabetes to work with their doctor to set and reach their A1C (average blood glucose level over the past 2 to 3 months) goal. It is also designed to help people learn if they are at risk of low blood glucose, known as hypoglycemia, and how to help reduce that risk. Managing blood glucose through diet, exercise and medication (if prescribed) is key to treating diabetes, but it is not easy. Nearly 30 million Americans have diabetes, approximately 90 to 95 percent of whom have type 2 diabetes. About one-third of adults with diabetes are not at their A1C goal.
